Question:

Would Bamboo serve as a good privacy screen in zones 7-8?

I have a fence but would like something to fill in the gaps and go higher than the fence.

Also, would Bamboo all along the fence line provide any type of sound dampening from neighbors yards?

  1. Bamboo would probably work fine, but be prepared: it can have quite a bit of leaf litter, and you probably wont be able to plant anything in that immediate area ever again.

Just be sure to buy a clumping bamboo. Those get thick enough to make your cover, but they dont run as badly as your average bamboo. It is very important to buy clumping, unless you don't mind digging bamboo out of the rest of your yard, forever.

Most bamboos do good in cold weather, so you should be fine on that front, but it wouldn't hurt to ask your local nursery specialist if the varieties they sell are hardy in your area.

  2. I would not recommend this unless you make sure that you have some kind of underground barrier to prevent the bamboo from going rampant in you and your neighbor's yard.

Regardless if you have running or clumping bamboo, it will still spread.

bamboo would serve as a privacy screen if you have about 4-5 feet planted width wise.

  3. If You do Bamboo, make sure You dig a hole deep enough for a 5 gallon bucket, plant it in the bucket.  Bamboo will create havoc in your whole yard, it travels on runners.  Why not try arborvitaes? They grow fairly quick, and are evergreen.

  4. zeebra stripes? i don't understand the Q

  5. Bamboo is very invasive but would work.

  6. I would suggest a hardy variety of oleander i.e. hardy red or hardy pink. they are freeze tolerant, drought tolerant, and definitely will grow higher than chain-link fencing. Although poisonous they are quite beautiful when in bloom. Bamboo is such a mess maker. As for sound dampening I think your out of luck on that one.
