Without a switch key to line you out - that is assuming the yard leads, sidings or spurs can be hand thrown, you might not get very far.  Even so, I don't know if it'd be very much fun or a very long ride.  Any number of things can happen including getting lined onto a siding or spur by a dispatcher - if the switches are controlled remotely... or gettting derailed.  Do you know what a derail looks like?  Can you read switch points?

Chances are you might damage the locomotive unless you know how to properly  inspect it first and check the fluid levels, inspect the engine  brakes,

If it is one kind, you may need to open cylinder c***s and blow out the condensate prior to starting  or risk bending a crank or rod - even starting it could run down the batteries if its not done correctly.  and some engines need to be primed first,

Would you know what circuit brakers to throw? Is the engine coupled to other cars?  Do you know how to release the handbrakes?  Pull pins? If its just you out in a yard, will you know what switches to throw to  line you out, or are they controlled by a tower?  Assuming you get out onto the main, is the line ABS equipped?  Do you know how to read them?  Chances are you won't know the line you are moving on, are there hazards, restrictions, slow orders ?

Are you familiar with dynamic pr air brakes? Do you know to avoid burning out traction motors?

Just tampering with railroad equipement or property will get you sent to a penitentary...and this is assuming you did not kill yourself and others in the process.   I just don't think it would be a very long or fun experience - but you may live to regret it.

Nah they won't mind .. just like you won't mind after a while being someones girlfriend in prison. Thats pretty stupid thinking it would be ok to even try that. You could get yourself and someone else killed for starters ... running into another train or something like that.

And pikago500 you know you could probably get into some trouble giving someone that info, if something really happened and it was found that you gave them the scoop about how to do it. Your Uncle could probably lose his job if the railroad found out he let you on there in the first place. Real smart telling people on the net how to move a train.

I'm sure if you even climbed on one, the big railroads would mind, to the point of having you thrown in jail.

Locomotives are more complex than most people realize.  With all the gauges, controls, levers, and switches, you'd be totally lost up there.  If you even got it started, I'd be impressed.

Plus, without knowledge of how the railway operates (like not being rules qualified), you'd be caught real fast, since you'd likely give yourself away shortly after moving.

Better to pay your admission to a museum that will give you a lift in vintage equipment than risking a lengthy jail sentence.  All someone observing would need to do is mention the "T" word (terrorist), and you'd be swarmed faster than a pound of honey near a bee hive.
