<<After you have been in the computing profession for a few years (I have been in it for decades), you find that the most expensive things a corporation can do are:

* Change hardware software systems used to run the enterprise ... generally if the old software will run on the new hardware, the costs are that of the new hardware, getting the software moved over, and renewing software licenses that are associated with the platform they run on ... the most expensive part of this is usually the software licenses ... that can cost more than all ofher expenses combined

* Move corporate offices to a new location (this is not as expensive as a conversion of hardware software)

* The most expensive is usually to change the software system used to run the company ... the biggest part of that is not the computer conversion, but the retraining of the work force from the old way of doing the business, to the replacement way

  1. Wow! If only I had time to read about Collins submarine project, but would I understand it. Could it be they had to change tact because things didn't work out as they had originally planned when setting out the original contract. Don't know where the superiority complex comes into it all, but if the old hardware system isn't up to the new software then that's would be a complete overhaul with new hardware. Don't know about submarines, but it would feel to me that this would be a big job, perhaps needing refitting of the vessel in part to accommodate said hardware.

Can't think this would be a huge leap for those who have already used the old hardware or software.

Perhaps it's comparable to renovating an old house, in theory you can budget the cost, in practice you may come across problems you didn't first detect, nor the experts who first looked at it.
