Would I be considered Irish?

I want to know if someone from Ireland would consider me Irish (in a ethno/cultural respect). All eight of my great-grandparents immigrated to America in the 30s and they have all passed down a lot of that culture to my grandparents and parents. Also they all spoke Gaelic and my family still uses some Gaelic phrases rather than English. I'm definitely not one of those annoying people who only remember their Irish ancestry on Saint Paddy's day and even then its only a ridiculous excuse to get drunk (pretty embarrassing). I've read up on Irish history and culture as well. Would I be acting presumptuous to consider myself Irish in an ethnic sense in Ireland?

Most Irish people would probably consider you American.  Irish-American, most likely, but still American.

Well im Irish (born ancbred here in Ireland) and honestly yes you would be acting presumptuouss to consider yourself Irish in Ireland.

You can of course say you had Irish relatives but to us you are not Irish.

Even if you speak Irish (in Ireland its called Irish never gaelic, gaelic is not even a language its a family of languages and when someone refers to Irish as gaelic its an immediate sign to us that they are not Irish. In Ireland gaelic is a sport).

In Ireland it onlys matters where you are born and not where your grandparents where born.

You are American to us.

six of my great-grandparents immigrated from Ireland and I consider myself Irish. So yeah I think you could say that you were and that would be fine.

You are American with an Irish heritage.

Being born in the US, with Irish heritage, wouldn't make you Irish nor would the Ireland natives think of you as such.  If you had been born in the US and immigrated back at a young age, it would still be questionable as to how you would be perceived.

So you are an American with Irish heritage.  Your parents are the same as yourself.  Your great grandparents were considered Irish-Americans (if they took the oath).

Most Americans are a mixed lot and celebrate their ancestors heritage so there's absolutely nothing wrong with strongly connecting with your Irish heritage.

You're an Irish American.  So am I, even though I have dual citizenship Irish/American.  My mother immigrated to the U.S. from Ireland.  I consider myself to be of Irish descent, however I belong to the Clan Flanagan.

I have a similar back ground.  Although I am Canadian, I fully celebrate my Irish heritage and am very proud of where my family comes from.  I also enjoy reading about Irish history and learning about Irish culture.

Celebrate your family and your traditions, it's great that your family carries forward traditons and Irish culture.
