  1. Wills have nothing to do with it.  No, you would not know unless the insured party told you.

  2. Only if the check shows up suddenly some day.

Life insurance policies are NOT directed by wills.  Family members can't "divert" funds from you, if you are the beneficiary.

  3. If you are a beneficiary, the insurance company will hunt you down. They are required to use all available resources to find you. And as other answer, beneficiary on a life insurance policy is not affected by the will. Proceeds are paid outside the will.

  4. The life insurance companies usually run a sweep every so often with the Social Security department to see if any of their policyholders are deceased that they don't know about.  They would then try to contact the beneficiary.

There is no guarantee that they would find out if the insured is deceased and there is no guarantee that they would find you.

  5. They are right. The insurance can only direct the funds to you if you are the true beneficiary. There can be no other claims, unless the is a contingent beneficiary. The insurance company will make every effort to contact you. If you think you may be entitled to funds and haven't been contacted, check your state for any unclaimed funds from any source. You can do this on line. Check unclaimed funds by state.
