I want to cancel a cheque but they will charge me £10.

But if I told them I've lost me chequebook, would they cancel the cheque and would they charge me?

  1. I think you would get charged either way for cancelling the check!

  2. If you tell them the cheque book was lost or stolen, then by law, they have to cancel the cheque book and issue you with a replacement, free of charge. I know this, because I work in the industry. They can only charge you if it was due to your own negligence.

  3. I am pretty sure that would not work.  They do not charge for a new cheque book, but nor would they cancel any cheques dated before the reported loss - only those after. You would be better negotiating with the person to whom you sent the cheque in the first place.

  4. You can still just cancel the one cheque, there is only a charge if you cancel by choice, no charge if you say you have lost it. (I shouldn't really encourage you to lie!)

No need to cancel the whole cheque book.

  5. Presumably the cheque was made out to someone and would be of no use to anyone else.

Therefore I would think the charge will stand.
