Question:

Would I get in trouble for sleeping in my car in France?

I am renting an expensive villa for three nights on the Cote d'Azure but have no accomodations the night before I arrive or the night after I leave. Was thinking about just sleeping in my rental car to save money (I'm a young guy alone). Would I get hassled by the French gendarmes?

  1. It might depend where your car is.  Perhaps they would let you park your car at the villa before and after the days that you rent it. Or you could stay at a hostel.

  2. It depends on location. The south of France should be swell. However, if in the more urban areas, you do run the risk of having your car rolled over and/or burned by the french youth rioting for employment reform.

  3. Yes you can, it's not forbidden, as far as I know, and I'm from France.

But it could be dangerous, so I will suggest you to park your car at gas station parking (opened all night) where there are some surveillance cameras , or on a highway lay-by (aire de repos).

Many truck drivers have to spend the night in their trucks and are parked on highway parking areas.

Of course, lock the doors, and hide expensive stuff.

  4. Yes, you can sleep in your car. Just make sure you are park in a nice area or in the country. Do not stay near a big road with traffic. If you are in the country (next to an oliver trees field or wine field for exemple) with no light around you could enjoy a beautiful night under the pure summer sky and the flying stars.... Have some bread, cheese and wine and why not some french company ....

    Have fun !

  5. I can't imagine you would get in trouble but I would think that you'd be a target for the thieves and such that hang around.

I would suggest you find a cheap room and stay overnight there.  It's safer than sleeping in your car.......

    Have a great trip!
