Question:

Would I get in trouble?

My roommate went out to get wasted and smoked a TON of pot last night, then was talking about it and saying she wanted to do other misc. drugs with her friends. If I know about this and don't tell the RA, do I get in trouble? She's really nice and we get along well; but the RA is actually responsible and nice too. We agreed that we wouldn't hold drugs or alcohol in the room, but still..

  1. no...you wont...and they cant prove that you knew, you would be fine even if they did find out...,that person above me is wrong...they have to have solid evidence that you have taken them or are involved...merely sharing a room is not solid evidence...just deny that you knew anything....and its not as if you take them urself....if you have agreed that no drugs should be held in the room...then it wont come to that anyway....colleges and unis dont investigate anything unless they FIND drungs in the room itself....merely appearing to be wasted on campus is not enough....they wont do anything about that, she could just be drunk......its highly unlikely that they will find out anyway...unless you tell them and dob her in because you are scared for yourself...in which case that would be you putting your own needs above hers in a BIG way...ask for a room transfer citing "personality" differences if you are worried for yourself, but dont ruin her college career because you are worried about covering your own back.Sorry if that sounds harsh.

but whatever u do, dont let her smoke it in ur room!! then she will be putting you at risk!!

  2. can u leave an anonymous note or ask to speak in private and ask that your identity be kept a secret because you are scared?

  3. If I were you I would indeed tell your RA and than tell your roommate that you don't approve of the use of drugs in your room.  Otherwise if the room gets busted than you will definitely get into trouble.  Think Before you Blink.

  4. I used to be an RA at a college in AZ where having marijuana can be a felony. For some reason that reality was so hard for the kids back East to grasp and it led to some trouble.

I had to uphold policies and make sure my residents were following the rules and the law. But I wasn't a cop. I could not stop a resident and give them a breathalyzer test if they came in wasted. If they weren't making noise and were not doing it in the residence halls then I let them go on their merry way. You are right to assume that the people who do that usually bring it in their room. But the RA cant do anything legally besides call the cops to search the room if they smell something and there is another process to have that person thrown out. Being the roommate you dont automatically get in trouble unless you are there when getting busted.

You dont have to tell the RA that your friend came in wasted and high. There isn't anything they can really do after the fact. Ask your roommate that its fine if she wants to do whatever but not in the room.

She could be testing her new freedom in college and not really go crazy after that. Or she could have been like that before too. Give it some time to see which way this blows. If it continues and she doesnt respect that one stipulation then ask for a room transfer.

You can always go to the RA if you are concerned about your roommate and let her know that you think she might need help. But thats if you feel she is really abusing herself. Not to clear your own name. They wont hold you accountable if you know she does things like that because you are not her parents. They hold you accountable for the things you do or the things the drunk a******s do in the corners at 3am and you are charged with the cleaning fee. But thats about it.
