valerian is an herb.  Herbs tend to lose their potency over time.  But if it is a capsule, it may be mixed with something (some kind of filler)  that would have a negative reaction.  I would get new ones if I were you.

No you would not. Not at all. Infact the only reason there is an expiry date is for the sake of the company that issued it. it is there to ensure potency. I have worked in Pharmacy for 6 years and we personally (not dispensed) use DRUGs let alone herbs for up to 2 years after they expire. Herbs that are dried properly last almost forever. I have a degree in Natural Health, I also make herbal formulas, so you can take this as a fact. The only thing you need to worry about is if it is still potent. also follow valerian with a warm tea, doing this helps it work faster!

You would probably not get sick. Because Valerian root is a herb it can't become very dangerous if it has expired. But it will probably lose some of its effectiveness, like Zvezda said. I recommend not taking it because except Valerian root, the capsules contain many other chemical stabilizers and chemical additions as well as other herb additions. Of course when it says that it's expiring on 04/2007, the actual expiring date is far away. That's because the medical companies must put the expiring date on the packing sooner than the actual just in case and because if the patient takes the medicine a little after the expiring date has past, he won't get any bad after-effects. So if the Valerian root expired on 04/2008 you could take it but since it expired on 04/2007 you should buy new ones.

Probably not.  The root is dried, so probably the worst thing would be that it has lost some effectiveness.  If they don't look strange (mold, etc.) they should be okay.  but I'm not a doctor  :)
