I plan on being a life-long bachelor and the job I would like to do pays about 200K a year at some point. Will the fact that I won't have a family leads to more deductions from my paycheck?

  1. Our current tax tables somewhat favor a married family with one earner.  Single people and married couples earning about the same of money pay about the same taxes per person and that is higher than a "family man" supporting a wife and a couple of kids.  Of course, his required expenses are going to be considerably higher than yours.

  2. Those of us with children thank you for your support.

  3. Yes. The government assumes that bachelors have no real use for their money. To help others out who they think are in serious need of financial assistance, they tax bachelors like you more than the average person.

  4. yes

  5. You will pay higher income taxes, but your disposable income will still be MUCH higher.  The cost of raising and maintaining a family is FAR greater than the modest tax benefits received.

HOWEVER, you'll probably pay much less in sales taxes unless you blow everything you earn.  And you'll pay less in property taxes if you stick with something more or less appropriate for a single person.  This further skews the tables in your favor despite the possibility of a higher income tax burden.

  6. Yes, singles without children pay more in taxes.
