Question:

Would I have a better chance getting into Berkeley...

... If I majored into something less competitive like say letters and sciences majors and not Business? My primary goal is to get into the Haas School of Business and pursue Law afterwards - however, I wouldn't mind majoring in Economics or something of similar field just to up my chances. Also, am I able to use the same UC Berkeley pathway with UCLA or UCSD? Currently, I am only following the business guidelines to UC Berkeley for transfer students - I need to know if this is also acceptable to different schools.

About me: I am working part time, going to community college full time. I currently have a 4.0 but I do need to work hard to secure an A. I am also working on finding extra curricular activities and volunteer work.

Thank you and your answers are appreciated.

  1. I don't quite think you understand how colleges work.

    1) The belief that certain majors are "less competitive" is nonsense, especially when you are talking about competing for the top spots in the class.  Even when some school's departments give typically lower GPAs (my school's Economics Department's average grade was a very low C), law and business schools reweight everything with grade distribution taken into consideration.

    2) Very few business schools accept college graduates without work experience.  It would make more sense to find a 4 year JD/MBA program or do the JD first, work, and then go for an MBA.
