I am considering going to school to become an ultrasound technologist. I have a Bachelor's degree in biology. Would this degree help me to get hired and earn more money in the sonography field? I do not want to pursue this career path if I would be wasting my 4 year degree.

  1. Where I live, becoming an ultrasound tech requires a 2-year associate degree.  Ultrasound techs have a very narrow and well-defined scope of practice.  The biology degree doesn't add to that in any way.  It might help you get promoted into a management position if you worked somewhere that needed a supervisor over a staff of techs.  But on a day-to-day basis, the biology degree won't matter if you're living and working in a state where an ultrasound tech only needs a 1 year certificate or a 2 year degree.
