  1. You may notice a slight improvement.  HDMI keeps everything digital...you start with a digital image, and it sends it in it's digital form to the tv, where it is displayed (say it with me)...digitally.  Component cables are analog.  So the digital picture gets converted to an analog signal, where some quality may be lost, and is then sent to the tv, where it is converted back into a digital form for display.

The biggest improvements tend to be in the sharpness of the picture, the color accuracy of the picture, and (especially with sports) the clarity of fast moving images.

While it is best to try to keep it all digital, don't drive yourself crazy.  It is not a night and day difference...it's a subtle improvement.  The added benefit of HDMI is that is also carries the audio signal to your tv.  This eliminates the need for additional cables running to your tv.

At some point you will upgrade to HDMI.  When you do, don't buy your hdmi cables from one of the big chains...there is no need to spend $50 on any cable....ever.   Look online...stay away from the $3.00 cables, but the ones in the $15 range are just as good as what you would find in the big stores for four times the price.

  2. No not really.  Using an HDMI imput would be ideal however.
