Would I run into trouble for selling unwanted Yahoo! Groups on Ebay?

There are a number of Yahoo! groups I started and don't want. I really would like to get some corrective surgery. So what sort of pitfalls would I run into for listing the unwanted groups on Ebay?

  1. why would anyone buy a group when they can just create their own. if you have unwanted groups, delete then or Yahoo will

  2. It is unlikely that your current members would pay a fortune for the groups.  It would probably be better for you to transfer the ownership of the groups to a small working group or an existing member.

You can easily transfer the ownership of a group from 1 ID to another by making the new ID an Owner, then leave the group yourself.

  3. ***You cannot legally sell something that does not legally belong to you.  You really should read Yahoo! TOS in regard to proprietary rights.***

I hope you are joking about this.

-You would never get high enough bids on eBay to cover cost for corrective surgery.

-Whoever might be dumb enough to bid on your Y! groups wouldn't be able to do access the groups which would result in them giving you negative feedback on eBay.

-If the angry dumb bidder reported you to Yahoo and eBay, you would lose your Yahoo and eBay accounts.

  4. Best case scenario - some idiot will buy your groups not realizing he can sign up for his own for free

Worst case scenario - Yahoo will sue the c**p out of you.  So much for your surgery.

  5. if you trying to make money try to make your own web site

  6. You cannot sell them, I guess, because creating a Yahoo group is free! Nobody will buy it!!

  7. While you may not be trying to sell Yahoo itself on eBay, when

you created these groups on Yahoo that you no longer want to maintain, you entered into an agreement with Yahoo. Therefore, Yahoo would probably actually be the true owner of your groups and I seriously doubt that Yahoo will allow you to sell the groups. Anyone wanting to start up a Yahoo group has to check the Yahoo agreement box, and as all of the other people that have answered your question so far have said, Yahoo probably has the right to sue the c r a p out of you for attempting to sell something posted on their web site. If possible, contact Yahoo and see what their policies are concerning this matter or ask for a copy of the Agreement you entered into with Yahoo when you signed up to create these groups. Looking at an Agreement or a Contract will tell you pretty much what you can or can't do legally, as far as Yahoo is concerned and it also covers your backside.

I don't know if you paid Yahoo a fee for starting these groups, but I once had a web site on Geocities, just one of the many subsidiaries of Yahoo, and I could not transfer my rights to another person or sell my sight because I paid Geocities a fee to start my web site which I closed down over a year ago.

I had a partner on my web site, but for some unknown reason, he dropped out of site and I wasn't able to contact him to see if he wanted the web site transferred to his name.

Both of us had to sign the agreement, but I was the one paying the monthly fees to maintain the web site. Since my partner and I were no longer in touch with each other and I was paying the monthly costs to Yahoo/Geocities to maintain this web site, I cancelled my Agreement so I wouldn't have to continue paying monthly fees for a business that wasn't making any money. I actually went into debt on this web site, so I wrote it off as a business expense, even though with the inventory, it didn't amount to very much, but still it was better to show a loss of money on my taxes rather than having to

"eat" the entire cost. If you charged your members a fee to join or be a member of your group, then you may be able to write off any expenses you incurred, if you paid a fee to Yahoo. In other words, some of these web groups make money off of people when they start up a group by charging a fee to use their web site for your group.

If you need corrective surgery, you would be better off starting a site on eBay to where you can legally sell things or if you know how to do web designing, you could always start up a design site and charge people for your services. Many people that want to start up a business do not have the skills or the knowledge how to do web designing, and if you do possess that knowledge, you might be able to make enough money to at least cover a portion of your surgery.  I hope you can find another legal alternative means to raise money for your surgery!

It is really bad that you do not have health insurance or that your insurance will not pay for your corrective procedure. Do you qualify for Medicare, Medicaid or some other form of government aid? Even if you were to go to a charity hospital, you would still have to qualify as a resident and have some proof that you are covered under government coverage before a hospital will do any surgical procedures unless you are paying on a strictly cash basis.

I hope you figure out something soon that will be of some help to you!  Best of luck to you!
