I KNOW it's a funny question. It's for a story. Gotta plant the Secret Code in something a woman sets aside (in springtime). Not a purse.

I was going to add, "No baseball caps," but bedevilled can't be choosy.

P.S. This takes place in NYC.

  1. The informal rule is that, once behatted, the lady stays behatted. Why? Hat head, of course.

  2. As far as I know, it is not a mandatory thing for a woman to take a hat off while dining, especially if she is out doors, due to the fact that it can be considered part of a woman's hairstyle. How about having one of these things getting left behind?~

    -a shawl

    -a cell phone/i-pod/blackberry

    -a watch/bracelet/necklace that came unclasped

    -sunglasses/reading glasses

    -jacket

    -lipstick

    -address book/agenda

    Hope this helps some.  :)

  3. Ladies ARE permitted to wear "formal" hats under most any circumstances.  Such hats might be fixed atop their heads by hatpins or clips.  Fashionable hats can be worn by ladies indoors, outdoors, while dining, etc.  The ONLY time a lady might consider removing her hat is during the playing of the national anthem, AND the hat is EASILY removable, such as a baseball cap.  If a lady is formerly dressed wearing a fancy "designer" or formal hat, she is NOT required to remove it during the playing of a national anthem.  This rule is written so that a lady's vanity is not made public, if she's forced to rearrange herself or her hair, so as to spare her any embarrassment.
