Question:

Would Muay Thai and Nihon Goshin Aikido blend well?

I used to study NGA then quit and started boxing again and went to Muay Thai. I feed like both are good for different things. You don't always have to strike someone if you don't want to in NGA. NGA is a mix of Aikido, Karate, Judo, and Jujitsu. I wished I didn't leave and would love to go back, but im really loving Muay Thai and maybe want to compete soon. Do you think training in the two alternating days will mess up either one. Reason being is because the kicks, punches, and stances are a lot different. Thank you for all the answers.

  1. You should definitly take both. If you are going to compete, both could be extremly helpful. It sounds like you know what to do, so do it. Good luck, and train hard.

  2. I would just focus on the Muay Thai until you get the stances down and develop muscle memory for the new moves ...  after that, you could probably mix up the days ...

  3. I would say no. You want to be able to work with complementary movements.

Muay thai emphasizes stand-up grappling (AKA clinching). This type of grappling is more like wrestling, or what you might see in traditional jujitsu, judo, or BJJ.

If you had the choice, I would go with judo. Judo is an often over-looked, but hugely effective art. Throws are some of the more devastating techniques around. Even unbalancing an opponent is good. It doesn't have to lead to a throw. You can always follow up with a strike

  4. Aikido is pretty g*y. Muay Thai is awesome. If you want to compete in Muay Thai, you have to be vicious! So I say stick to Muay Thai.

  5. This really depends on your proficiency in either style. If have a solid understanding in Muay Thai then practising NGA (something you already have some experience in) should not hinder your ability to learn.

If you haven't been training in either for longer than a year then I recommend sticking to just one for that one year minimum before cross training.

You will have to be able to leave the other style at the door when training each night and that can be difficult for a beginner.

    Good Luck.
