Would RENT be an unfomfortable musical to see with my parents?

I'm going to New York this summer and I've been wanting to see RENT for so long... and now that it's closing I feel like it's my only chance.

If you saw it with your parents, was it sort of awkward... what with all the sensitive content? Was it worth it?

  1. I honestly did not see the play with my mom. I wouldn't let her even see the movie.

It depends greatly on your parents views. If they are religious and conservative I would say definitely do not see Rent with them! If you have your heart set on going to see it then go! It is so good. Talk to your parents before the show and tell them that there is drug usage, homosexuality, AIDS, and strong language. If they don't think they will like it then you might have to pick another show. Sorry.

  2. Without knowing your age at all, or any liberal or conservative attitudes of your parents, I have a thought. OR two.

Do they know of your notion? Do they support it? Are they/were they ever, Theater people?

Also in not knowing your age, that equates to not knowing the age of your parents. Shows similar to RENT have been around for decades, and certainly the cast is usually older teens, or young adults, portraying life in the level, genre, scenario.

I guess "SENSITIVE" might be subjective and relative to your parents definitions of those words, and appropriate might equate to your REAL life upbringing, maturity, age, etc.

It isn't a show for CHILDREN, but it isn't so horribly offensive in 2008,,, as many CHILDREN might be far more astute than their parents?

I pretty much think you're asking the wrong people here, even those of us who are parents, and us not knowing YOU at all.

    Just my two "scents"

  3. If you absolutely must see it with your parents, try to make it just one of them and bring a friend or something. Otherwise you'll have a lovely time actually watching it, but you'll have a nasty surprise "talk" afterwards about things you'd rather not discuss in length

  4. Absolutely not. I saw it with my mom and my brother and it was not awkward at all. But, i guess i have to consider that my mom likes musicals and we had been listening to the music since weeks or months before hand..soo....
