  1. I have the AF 70-300 mm ED and use it on my F4 and F5 cameras.  It works just fine.

The one linked to your question is "G" lens, so has no aperture ring, so will not work on older 35 mm cameras like your FG-20

  2. If its a digital DX lens it will not work on a film camera. A digital DX lens is made for the aps size sensor that is smaller than a 35mm negative. if you put any DX lens on a film camera all four corners of the negative will be cut off. A film 70-300 lens is a good choice for your Nikon.

  3. Assuming that your lens is compatible with the camera body, it can work for you in a pinch. I say this because it's a little large if you want to use it as a portrait lens. A typical portrait lens is about 90mm. This will allow you to get close to your subject without getting physically close. 70-300 is a bit more power than you need - it's great for sports or distant shooting, though.

I'm concerned about the sharpness of this particular lens for portrait use. A fixed lens is the best, I've found. For that matter, even a simple 50mm is not too bad for portraits.

If you can afford a portrait lens, you 'll enjoy the results.
