It's my little cousin's birthday today and I was told she really likes to read, so I thought I'd get her the 1st Harry Potter book. Would she be able to read it? She's going into 4th grade this year.

  1. Sure, I started reading Harry Potter when I was in Year 4 - thats 3rd Grade I think. They are great books. ;] I finished reading them ages ago lol - im going into Year 11 now which is 10th grade, and I still enjoy reading them from time to time - I think they are suitable for more or less any age range. ;]]

  2. She should. I was able to read the 1st Harry Potter book in the first grade.

  3. Defiantly. I read the first one in third grade. My cousin is in 5 grade at the moment and he first began reading it at fourth grade too. But of course it depends on your cousins reading level. Most kids in 4th grade can read it and also understand it. Especially the first two books, since they are more for children than the others. You can get one for every year of your cousins birthday, since the books do get more mature as the series progress.

    :]

  4. If she loves to read, then she'll probably be able to handle it although it may take her a while. The content of that book isn't that bad either considering that it is one of the first books.

I started reading them in fourth grade, if that helps.

  5. yes she could be able to read them she should like them too, she might be a little ahead of everyone else in her class so get it for her

  6. I started reading Harry Potter in 3rd grade. If you're feeling sorta weird about getting her the book, get her the audio CD as well. The first book is pretty easy to read...

  7. I'm a 4th grade teacher and can tell you that several of my students have enjoyed the Potter books.  If your cousin really likes to read, she is probably a pretty good reader and can handle it.

  8. Yes. J.K. Rowling's books started off easy, not using much complexity in her vocabulary, so it was easier to understand for children.

Though, as the books progress, so do the vocabulary and sentences, as well as everything else. I started reading them in 4th grade and had no trouble. The first two books are easy to understand. The third is fairly easy, but only because the plot is more complicated. But for the most part, they're good for that grade.

    & happy birthday to her!

  9. I am not sure.  I guess so but she might not enjoy it.

  10. Well, when JK Rowling started the series, that was the target age group, so I would hope so!  They do get more mature as they progress, but so will your cousin, and if the later ones confuse her, you can always help her understand them.

  11. Of course. I read the first four books when I was in the first-grade. Your cousin will definitely be able to enjoy Harry Potter.

    : )

    Happy birthday to her!

  12. If she likes to read and has a good vocabulary then yes. Maybe read it with her though, because she may misunderstand something and may need someone to help her.

  13. well u can read it to her but i read it i read all of them that were out when i was in fourth grade they were really good :) i really enjoyed them it well broaden her imagination too

  14. if shes really into books and has vocabulary knowledge it would be really good for her.

  15. Maybe if you bought it for her, you could read it together and if she doesnt understand it, you can explain to her. She'll also appreciate spending some quality time with her cousin.xx

  16. If she can read pretty well, then yes. They're not a hard level, but they are a bit to take in sometimes. I love them, and I read them for the first time when I was about her age or a bit younger, I think, (though I could have read them earlier if I hadn't hated reading at the time). She'd probably like them.

If you really want to get her a book, another suggestion from me would be The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis. They're absolutely magical and I think that everybody should read them.

Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt is really great and easy to read.

    Hope I helped!

  17. I'm going into middle school and i just started the Harry Potter series in the beginning of August and i'm already on the 5th book! I love the Harry Potter books and if she likes to read she'd love them too.

  18. Well maybe if you help her read it and explain to her, but I think she will get bored because it's so long

  19. Good idea, she'll love it. Same goes for the second, third etc. I read The Lord Of The Rings in grade 4, Harry won't be too advanced for her. Just like T.L.O.T.R the Harry books are WAY better than the movies. She will love them guaranteed.

  20. Yes... but its also cool, if parents read it to there children...I read it to my cousin! So yah, she will. And anyway, the first book isnt that Hectic, so Im sure she'll cope!

  21. Yes, she would probably be able to read the 1st book.  Since she likes to read, I assume she is a good reader.  The books get a little harder as you progress through the series.  She will do fine with the book.

  22. Since you say that she is already a bibliophile, then she should be able to handle it.  =]

  23. Sure! Someone I know started to read the books in year 1. Although it was difficult she loved them.

  24. Since she really likes to read I'd say yes, because I was reading chapter books in first grade so it should be. If not then get the audio tapes for her then.

  25. I read the first book when I was in 4th grade. The first ones are more easily understood by grade schoolers. The last three are a little more complex.

  26. It all depends on her reading level, she is definitely in the right age bracket to give it a try.  My son has read all but 1 of them and he is going to turn 11 soon, but is advanced in reading.  Now if only I could get him to do so well with math.....

  27. I started to read harry Potter when I was 9 and I udnerstood so I think she'll like.

  28. yes, definitely.  me and a bunch of my friends started reading them in the 3rd grade. just be sure she is a good reader, what with all the bigger words...

  29. I was five when I started them, so yeah, she could definitely read them.  They're really good too!

  30. yeah, absolutely! But maybe she should wait with book 5-7 until she's older because they're a bit darker.

  31. Yeah, I started reading them when I was in fourth grade. The first few books were targeted specifically at children, so they shouldn't be too hard to read, and they're pretty easy to understand. They start getting a little more complicated at the 5th one. Not by a lot, but a bit.
