Question:

Would a 50 watt 4 ohm amplifier be enough to power a 50 watt 8 ohm rated PA horn?

I am looking for a car amplifier to use with my 50 Watt RMS 8 ohm PA horn. All I am able to find are 50 W 4 ohm amps. Would it be a problem to get one of those? Do I have any other options? Thanks.

  1. If your ohms are that far off it won't sound right.

  2. Relax, Your idea should work fine.

I have built 2 different vehicles with PA systems in them and used car audio amps with pa speakers.

The PA speaker being 8 ohms is no different from using a single 8 ohm woofer.

At 8 ohms the 50 rms amplifier will put out 40 rms so not a concern as far as compatability.

Is the PA Speaker 50 watt Max or 50 Watt RMS???

If the PA speaker is about the size of a shoe box, it may be 50 wat max and 15-20 watt rms, that would be a problem.

The PA Speakers i have installed were 100 RMS and they were really big speakers, Like home theater sized.

Other than that, you will be fine.

  3. I'm not sure how it would sound but i would get a 2 channel that is 100 watts RMS bridge @ 4 ohm and try it..... I'm just guessing.

  4. the problem is the pa horn isnt meant for a car , that is why the ohm rating is so far apart . in addition to it not sounding good like the other answer said , it will do damage to either the amp or the speaker . you need to use a house type amplifier , but then you may also need a power inverter since house equipment runs on ac and cars run on dc

  5. It will be just all right...will not sound the way you think it will..
