Would a 550W power supply provide enough power for the following system?

Is 550W enough for

Q6600 CPU

+

HD4850 GPU?

I wouldn't use crossfire or overclock.

I would also have 500gb HDD and 2Gb of RAM

I was thinking of getting the Gigabyte Superb 550W PSU. Does anyone know if it is any good and where I can buy one?

  1. hi mate

the average p.c with intergrated graphics and audio will only use around 150 to 200 watts of power, however manufactuers will ship their p.c,s with a 300watt psu as standard

however the single biggest draw of power in a p.c is the dedicated graphic card especially the high end models, for example the gtx280 draws nearlly 150watts of power, that would once run a entire p.c,how things have changed !

for a rough idea of your power usage in your new pc why not use the "power supply calculator" at http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalcul... enter your p.c,s specs and then click the "calculate" button

you will then recieve a total in watts, and this is how much your p.c uses, however as a tip i would allways add between 100 and 150watts to that total just to be sure

as a rough guess because pc power is not a exact science,i would imagine your p.c will happlily run with around 500watts so the Gigabyte Superb 550W PSU is more than enough for this particular pc

however allthough you have clearly stated you dont plan to run a crossfire configuration you will need to buy a more powerful psu if you do go crossfire at a later date

as for the hard drive, the capacity has no bearing on the power it requires,a ide hard drive will use about 15watts

of power and a sata around the same,

give the power supply calculator a try and remember to enter all your hardware and peripherals, missing any will give you a false report and this is counter productive

               any problems let me know

                       good luck mate !

  2. Yes,  Great Choice. You will have more than enough power and the 500 gb hard-drive is a great match to your 2 Gb of Ram.  The Gigabyte Superb PSU was listed on EBAY; One new and one rebuilt. You can also buy one on the Internet at POWER SYSTEMS Electrical; PDU, CPU and UPS cabinets. All Listed for SALE on the INTERNET. Great System and complete.  I like the INTEL CORE 2 QX6700  CPU over the Q6600 because of the Kentsfield 2.4 GHz  2 X $ MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Quad Core Processor. The 550W Power supply is perfect for the fans and the Q6600 CPU and the HD4850 GPU combination. Great match up . Should be balanced , with lots of speed and memory. The Review on system motherboards and processors is high. I suggest looking at the Quad Core ; Core 2 Extreme QX6700. Tested higher. Go to ITREVIEWS.com and read overclocking the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 and compare. You can buy everything you will need and compare at Nextag.com and  Newegg.com My eyes are going red from reading all the reviews on motherboards ad processors. From everything I have read this is a perfect match.

  3. Yes its Perfect...also get a tv tuner....its $16... at tigerdirect.com..anyway....you can find power supplies on tigerdirect.com

  4. Why do you need 550 watts my whole system runs off 240watts 13amp.

  5. a standard 550watt system should be more than enough as long as you don't have a modded case (fancy lights etc).

can i recommend a good website for everything pc?? they sell all kinds of parts very cheap. a lot cheaper than major retailers.

ive attached the link for you.

  6. no do not get that.

    look at this

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...

theses are better than most. maybe the best pws you can get. Not sure but dam good

  7. Power consumption of the Q6600 is 102W under load,  and the 4850 takes up 233W under pressure, and so, due to an average of 75% efficiency for mid-range PSUs, 550W simply won't do. This should keep your PC happy though:

  8. you need to consider every component that will draw power in your system, including anything that you MIGHT add in the future. CPU, GPU, hard drives, optical drives all take power. a 550W would be the LOWEST PSU i would consider...

  9. That shouldnt be a problem.

as to where ti by it we need to know where you are.

    Good luck

  10. According to this review:

    http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers...

that Gigabyte model is really a 450 watt PSU (the 550 watt figure is peak power).  It would probably (barely) work for your system, but there are better PSUs, and it wouldn't hurt to have some extra capacity. I'd suggest a Corsair power supply, such as a 550vx.

To see how much power you'll need, plug your system configuration into this power supply calculator:

    http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

My rule of thumb is to multiply the number it gives by 1.5 and choose a power supply that size or larger.
