Question:

Would (a) Clown Loach(es) be suitable for a 55 gallon?

The tank itself is a standard 55 gallon rectangular one. It has 3 filters (2 undergravel). The tank has 2 caves (1 huge, 1 small). 1/3 of the tank is for swimming with some big (fake) plants. The bottom is gravel. Overall the setup has 11 small fishes (biggest are the mollies) and I was wondering if a clown loach or 2 would do fine. I also have small guppies (possible food targets). From what I've read clown loaches shouldn't eat my guppies but you guys be the boss. Would the loach fit in?

  1. A group of clown loachs would be OK in that tank for several years, but eventually they will outgrow it.

Maybe look at some of the small loaches, like zebra or yoyo, you could keep a group in a 55gal for life, and they are OK with guppies.

Always keep loaches in a group, 4 or more is best. One is likely to sulk, and two may not get along. Bigger the group, the better they do. So 6 small zebras is a better choice than 1 big clown.

  2. No. Clown Loaches need at least a 100 gallon tank. And the need to be in school 5 or more. Invest in a bigger tank.

  3. Yes. i keep mine in a 20 gallon tank. It's all good despite the fact that they grow really really slow. Had mines for almost 2 years and its only 4 inches long.

  4. Yes, they get about 8-10 inches, and they are schooling fish. So you need at least 3...6 would be best. They are big, but their mouths are small, so don't worry about them eating other fish. Keep in mind, they grow VERY slowly, but they will get BIG!
