I am 16 years old and I went and test drove an '87 with 110,000 miles. It drove pretty solid and it was really clean. My parents thought it would be a great first car for me. I just wanted to know if you guys thought it would be a good first car. Is it reliable, safe, and easy to fix? I'm kinda handy with tools and my dad is really handy. Any help is appreciated!

  1. I think its a great choice one of the best decades for Mercedes, the late 80's are bomb proof. but if somthing does break depending on what it is you could be looking at expensive repairs.

  2. Personally id never buy anything that old with that many miles, but thats just me. One thing you should know though, parts for German cars are EXPENSIVE! Other than that if you still want it, go for it. Good Luck!

EDIT- Don't listen to the guy above me. I had a 2000 Neon and it was super-easy to fix, and fairly reliable.

  3. yes it is a gd first car and yes its safe but i dont know if its easy to fix but it cant be that hard just never get a neon lol...they are really hard to work on lol...i have one hope this helped you

  4. The Mercedes E-series built from 1984-1995 (Type W124) is solid as a rock reliable as a swiss clockwork and nearly immortal. Engines (especially the larger 4-cylinders) often live up to 300,000 miles or more without any problems!

Also the type w124 is safe and rust is rarely a problem.

OK.. I'm German and maybe a bit patriotic with cars. But if you don't believe me:

Stolen Cars from Germany or western Europe in general are often brought to eastern Europe to be sold there. The MB type W124 is the most often stolen car in Germany at the moment! The Russians know quality.. ;o)

  5. I had a brand new 190 2.3, (1993, the last year of production) and I loved it. Solid as a rock, and stone reliable. The '93 model had all the updates and bugs worked out by that time. In '87, the model was just out for 3 years, so it's possible that there were some lingering problems, but likely wouldn't matter by now anyway. Get a detailed inspection, bumper to bumper. Expect pricey parts if bought from the dealer! Good luck...

  6. sure it would be a good first car but generally mercedes are not easy to fix if you want something that is easy to fix look for a GM truck.

  7. They are a good car if you take car of it,  they are easy to fix if you are handy with tools and have some what of mechanical ablitie.  the car was made for the d.i.y.'s, easy tune ups and easy oil changes.  if you have any problems you can find a online fix for it.
