  1. The US embassy will already have everything they need to know about you before you step foot on their territory, especially as you'll need to become a US citizen to join their fire service. The fire service will simply request the information they need from the US embassy that has them.

EDIT: Didn't read your question right. If you are a US citizen and can simply move back there at anytime without having to apply for a VISA, then no, they won't check for any criminal convictions in the UK. They will no doubt ask if you have ever been done for a crime, but the expense would be too much for just one department to make one request like that.

  2. YES.  When applying for any type of law enforcement position, including the fire department, a criminal background check will be generated and reviewed.  As you have lived only in the UK, that is where your "rap sheet" will be ordered from for review.

Contrary to the previous answer, if you are a US citizen, returning to the US will clearly not be an issue.

  3. Some employers will check overseas both the criminal records and employment history of there potential candidates thought its down to if they can be bothered.

Take me for example, work for a UK police force, they security check me through interpol and with the New Zealand Justice service and that of my families convictions back home...it took them about two months so my start date was delayed slightly.

Its down to the employer really if they can be bothered to go to such length's.

So i guess it depends on the policy of that fire department in the US and if you think believe they will go to such lenghts...if i were to take a stab in the dark i would suggest they wouldn't if its a small time fire service for your town/state but more likely the bigger they are.

  4. Your criminal record will be checked when you apply to enter the USA and if it is bad you might not be allowed entry.

Whatever is found will be stored on the US governments computer data bases. It can then be accessed by public bodies like the Fire Dept
