  1. The Black Knifefish is a nocturnal predator, and like most Knifefishes, it locates its prey with weak electrical pulses. This is why they seem secure in a clear plastic tube, they are not visually oriented. Tankmates to avoid are other electrically guided fish(Elephant nose,"Baby Whales" and the catfishes that make their livings in a similar manner).  They are predators, and therefore require live foods to thrive.

As to compatability with large Cichlids, there should be no problems as long as the tank is suitably large,40 to 50 gallons minimum.

  2. Absolutely not.  The Green Terror or Jack Dempsey would be fine, but the BGK would end up terrorized with open wounds on a constant basis.  This is just not a good idea.  If you want something similar in appearance, a Blue Acara would be a much better choice-- it is far more peaceful but exhibits almost identical coloration as that of the Green Terror.

  3. The knife would need a hiding place for the day time since it's a nocturnal fish.  A cozy length of pvc pipe would do fine.  With this in place the fish should both be fine.
