Would it make it to California from New York? Its in great conditon, brand new tires. Id be going in July so it might have closer to 115,000 by then since work is 30 miles away. Would it make it? And still be in good condition or should i just get a rental?

  1. It's not as much the number of miles as it is how it was driven and taken care of. Have a reptutable mechanic check it out, get it tuned up and oil changed and it should be OK. If you don't feel confident about it making the trip, then go with the rental if you can afford it. It depends on how much peace of mind you want. If anything happens to the rental they will just give you another one whever you are.

  2. depends on how well the car has been maitained.  have a reputable, mechanic check it out.

  3. It should but I would be leery!  You never know. Not to mention are you traveling by yourself?  That may not be in the best interest!    Most definitely it will not be in the best shape after the trip, because you will need to come back.  Which you do not mention.  And to put that many miles on a car, would really stress it! If you got a rental, you may need to be 25 to rent!  something to think about!  Not to mention the amount of money to rent and then pay for gas....as i heard it is well over 4.25 a gallon in some areas of Califoirnia!

  4. I'd have a trusted mechanic go over it real good first. If it's in good shape then OK. You never know when something's going to break though, especially if it's mostly town miles and you're going to push it 2500 miles at highway speeds.

  5. You didn't say what kind of car, lots of newer cars make 200,000 miles without much trouble, however you never know for sure, even brand new cars break down.If you decide to take it have your self a backup plan if it leaves you stranded, and costs a fortune to fix.Good luck to you.

  6. Most modern cars are good for 200,000 miles if they are serviced properly and not abused. My last old Ford did 190,000 miles ,but I did have a few engine problems around the 80,000 mile time, due to my outrageous driving and bad work by a local workshop. but after getting the problem sorted no other expensive problems.

  7. No one can tell you will it make it. The option for a rental car has the same or greater risk of not making it. If you have taken care of your car and you know your car. I would feel better driving it. But with a rental you have some security if something did happen they would put you in another car and you would be on your way cheaper than you repairing your car.

    Good luck in your travels.

  8. If you can afford the rental buy the rental. Why put more miles on your own personal vehicle? If you plan on staying in California mine as well drive it. Honestly no one here can tell you if your car can make it judged solely by your miles. Kinda. If it were in say a civic then yeah you should be fine. If it was in some old Ferrari or Porsche then yeah id be kind of scared. Lol i'm only kidding, best thing you could do is take it to a trusted mechanic and see what he thinks. Ask him and then you will get your answer. If he says yes then why not? Make the drive! And i would only drive that far in my own car if i was planning on leaving it there as well. Good luck on your trip!

  9. if you follow the maint interval why would it not? a rental can also break down.

i went x country in a volvo with 270 k mi just fine. hiway miles are easy on cars.

do consider some road asst membership like better world club or aaa, bring a cell phone and keep a few gallons of drinking water, gotta be prepared no matter what car you're in.
