Just an addition to steelhead, I have used an automatic fly reel before and it definitely takes away from the fishing experience. However, for some people an automatic reel is a necessity that enables them to enjoy this fine sport and to me... that's awesome!!!

Well, I don't drink beer, and when I've got a bite, I can hold my cigarette in my mouth or set it on a dock piling or hand it over to Brandon or any number of other ways to get it out of my hand while reeling. If you're old and feeble or otherwise disabled, I suppose electric reels are fine, but I (personally and I'm obviously not alone) think it's cheating... if you can't reel it in yourself because you're too lazy, it's time to quit fishing and become a couch potato.

No, I would never use it. Reels like that take all of the technique form fishing. Anyone can hook a monster fish and push a button to have it reeled in, but it takes a truly talented fisherman to reel plenty of fish on his own.

Nope, there have been that type of reel around for more than 60 years. They have never been  that popular.

Not as cool as my idea. I have several ways to catch fish and one of them sounds very similar to what you're suggesting, we call it a trotline.

They already exist, they are called the electra-mate reel helper, diawa also makes a series of electric reels.

Not to me. Setting the hook and reeling that bad boy in is what its all about. It's an adrenaline rush. Why change it?

I'd rather fight that fish myself with a traditional reel. I also think in some fish fighting situations it's important to "play" the fish. I don't know how well that would go with an auto reel. Setting the drag, letting it run a little, keeping constant pressure but not too much reeling, can be very important when fighting big fish with light line or ultralight fishing. Personally, I need to be in control of every aspect of it. I don't smoke at all and don't drink beer while fishing, but it may work for some.

I, am of the opinion of,if a person ( other than someone with a severe handicap ) is so lazy that they need a reel that will automaticaly reel in a fish, so they can drink a beer & have a smoke, without being disturbed, should be at home, drinking & smoking & leave the fish alone
