Would a gps device require a subscription?

hey there, I recently saw a gps in cvs for $99

do i need to buy a monthly subsciption or something?

or does it works for free?

and also how would it tell where my vehicle is going?

  1. The GPS device that I own and that my friends own (mine is a Pioneer, others have theirs built into their cars, TomTom, or Panasonic) do not require extra monthly subscriptions.

    I don't know specifics on the inner workings of a global positioning system (GPS), but I do know that it uses satellites to target where you are while you're driving. The satellites are basically what tells your device where you are and looks at where you're going and such.

    I know that with my GPS system, it came with a USB cord and a CD that connects to the internet to update the maps so that you don't have outdated information through the years.
