Would a man-made island in the middle of the ocean be an independent nation?

If one were to erect a man-made island in the middle of the ocean, thousands of miles from land, would it be autonomous from all other nations? Would it be considered, by default, an independent nation?

  2. If you were to inhabit an island that was previously unknown and in international waters, you could apply to the UN for sovereignty.  Your borders would be drawn at that time, which includes the surrounding waters.

  3. Yes, as long as it were hard to find and appeared to other nations to have little or no value.
