  1. The pocket trumpet is just as loud as a full-sized horn, and is OK for home practice. In my opinion. Your teacher may want you to use a better quality full-sized horn instead. But the pocket trumpet is a nice addition if you already have a regular sized horn.

I have played the trumpet for years, and recently wanted to purchase a pocket trumpet to add to my collection. I researched pocket trumpets extensively, and ended up buying a nice new one, not Jupiter, on eBay for a bit over a hundred dollars. I am very happy with it, and there are many available there all the time. There are also music stores around on the Internet that sell the same horns. Jupiter is one of the more expensive ones, but a name brand and a pretty good one at that.

I would not buy one that is shipped from overseas, as they tend to be inferior from what I know. Stay with a domestic seller who has a high positive feedback rating on eBay. The brass horns are usually the least expensive, along with the colored horns, while the silver and nickel-plated versions are a bit higher. They all generally come with a mouthpiece, case, and oil.

I find the tone and valve action of my pocket horn to be as good as my standard sized Olds Ambassador Bb trumpet.

Though generally pocket trumpets are not used for professional gigs, and your teacher probably wouldn't advise it as your main instrument, it is a fun and compact and easily portable little horn. Have fun with it!
