Would a prepaid at&t sim card work with the iphone 3g?

well i just bought a brand new iphone 3g from my friend not ebay and he had it on a plan from at&t so its still locked. would a prepaid at&t sim card work with it while its locked and what happens when it works? will i lose features or will they all still all work, can i still update also or will it brick?
