Question:

Would a psychiatrist write me a prescription for this?

I was once hospitalized for depression, and after I was released (about 3 years ago), I was prescribed antidepressant medication.

Every month for about a year, I saw a psychiatrist. At my last session with her, I talked about how I felt I was trapped in a small town with no employment opportunities (I had just graduated from college and couldn't find a job). She encouraged me to move and go to grad school. Long story short, it didn't work, and I came home. I was too ashamed to face her and admit my failure. I let my prescription run out, and haven't taken them in over a year.

My question is, given my history, would a dr. be likely to write me another prescription? I don't have any health insurance and was having trouble affording the medicine (my reasons for going off it). My financial situation is better now, and I am considering getting back on it.

  1. You would have to be re evaluated, and the correct dosage perscribed.

  2. i'm on Seroxat as an antidepressant , if you stop taking the dose then you would most likely need a medical from you consultant to first see if indeed you needthem and then to start you off on a small dose, in England here yes is the answer to your question.

  3. Yes absolutely :)

  4. Psychiatrists understand that people try and fail, at life and at staying on medication.  If you liked this person and felt they were helpful to you, definitely go see them again.

Words like "shame" and "failure" are hallmarks of depression.  Get help.

  5. First, do not let finances keep you from taking your medication.  There is a website called freedrugcard.us.  It is free and I have used it before to get a discount on my prescriptions.

Another possiblity is to contact the drug manufactuer directly and if you meet their guidelines they will send the medications to your doctor directly.  There is no cost for the medication.

There is no reason to be embarrased to see your doctor,  She is there to help you not belittle you.

Go see her for the meds.  Who knows?  After you get back on your meds, you may be able to go back to grad school and be successful.

  6. Definitely go back.

  7. Yes a doctor will write a prescription for you. My suggestion... ask for samples. Every doctor has samples from pharmaceutical reps. Doctors also are sympathetic to your financial situation. A few friends of mine who just don't have a lot of money continually get samples from their doctor.

You obviously will need to make an initial appointment and the rest is available at no cost.
