Question:

Would a robot with Artificial Intelligence question his limitations?

If we created a robot with all of the programming technology we have today, and this robot acquired artificial intelligence, do you think he would believe the world is as he sees it and nothing more?

A friend of mine asked me this and I told them I cannot give them a definitive answer since it would depend on the level of the robots acquired intelligence and its capacity for thought. They got annoyed with me and said it's a simple yes or no question.

  1. At the basic level, a being with mental faculty must trust its ability to ascertain that which surrounds it.

  2. I would hope the robots would not question their limitations. That is the trouble with humans.

Humans need to accentuate the positive, improve what it not a limitation, but more inportantly see "limitations" as either the tools they have to work with, or learn to exceed the limitation.

Examples: as a tool we have to work with. Ayn Rand said it was impossible to hear a human voice over the distance of 240,000 miles. Now that is a limitation when you want to put a man on the moon. So we invented the technology that allowed radio waves to work from space and back and forth. We exceed the limitations. As Rand said, it is still impossible to hear a voice over that distance, or over much distance at all unless you are on a mountain or something. Isn't that a limitation? But we overcame it.

If robots only "questioned" their limitations instead of meeting and exceeding them, they will never be smarter than humans.

  3. Yes. (if that's the simple answer you want) Because Intelligence (natural or artificial) must have curiosity as one of its major components, or it is not intelligence.

  4. Do you play video games? The bad guys are A.I.. Now, you tell me if inside that cd of yours you think the bad guys are saying, "man, what a bleek existence".

  5. I think with current technology your 'intelligent robot' would not have an ability to question it's limitations. If you think about humans, I believe that we question our limitations because of emotion. If i feel down, i may question my capabilities. WIthout emotion there are many questions which may never arise. Of course, robots can be trained to have a particular response to a particular action but as far as i know no robot has genuine emotions. Because of this I would say 'No' to your question although you are right that it is not really a yes or no question.
