Would a rottweiler make a good family pet?

I am looking to buy a rottie for the family.A friend of mine is selling me a pup for 200, and she said that both parents are family dogs and dont show signs of aggression. I want to know, would they make a good family dog? I just love the breed. The only breed I have expierence with is german shepherds.

They make good family pets for the right people.

As long as you've had experience and know the breed and have researched them, you should be fine.

EDIT: I will tell you this, IMO, I would not get a Rottweiler from somebody who is selling it for $200. Reguardless if they were friends or not. Most people are forced to get their Rotties from a Reputable breeder because they are being so badly bred. If it were me, I would definately get one from a reputable breeder or have one imported from  German bloodlines.

I've never had one but I love the breed as well.

I've known a couple of families with rotties and they were NOT nice dogs at all.  However, the families wanted them to be guard dogs.

I think if you truly want them as a family pet and not a guard dog then you can raise them to be nice to everyone.

People generally think of rottie's as the opposite of a family pet but if you get a puppy and train it to be around children there shouldn't be a problem. Although they can be unpredictable they can make great family pets if properly trained. However if you have small children or are planning to I would strongly recommend that you're catious in the first few weeks. A German sheperd would make a better family pet. Take a look at these articles. In all cases the rottweilers were pets, which is a little worrying.

However if you are completely sure that this is the right thing to do, then you should go ahead and get the puppy, just be sure to train it as soon as possible. Remember that not all dogs are the same

People think they are bad dogs but it what the owner trains them to be. I have lots of friends and family who have a rottweiler and have small kids. they are great dogs.

my first dog was a Rott, i have 2 german shepherds now and to answer your question..... i think a rottweiler is the definition of a perfect family dog, they are one of the most loving and gentle, playfull dogs to their familys and at the same time one of strongest, fiercest guard dogs their is.... very very humble dogs
