I'm going to set up a small tank for my cousin and I got a 2 gallon tank. He wants a crab. I know they need access to air and everything, but will the single crab need a filter. I don't know how dirty crabs are. I always thought of them helping keep the tank clean.

  1. i would get one of those cheap filter things that is pwered by an air stone and u should be good. make sure it cant crawl out of the tank, and make sure u do frequent water changes with dechlorinated water. hope this helped.

  2. put a air stone,u dont need a filter, clean it every week, and do water changes.

  3. Yes it will need a filter.  These crabs need brackish water, and without the filter, it will just stagnate, which will give you a less-than-pleasant odor.  Along with the filter, you'll still need to do weekly water changes to remove built up waste and replace used minerals.
