Would a small boat (like a schooner) have had an engine in the late 1800s?

I am wondering if schooners have engines (or would have in the late 1800s).

Or if any smaller boats would have had engines back then...

    as was mentioned, steam plants were just too big and bulky; engines didn't go into small ( under 100 foot) boats until the automobile industry started producing small diesel and gas engines; almost all the "coasting" schooners were designed to sail and not take up valuable cargo space with such new fangled ideas as engines

  3. I doubt that they would've had steam engines ,to big and bulkey,they might've got small diesels later on,but that would've been it
