  1. The original QHs WERE TBs.  The new breed has been specifically bred for big engines, ideal for bursting out of the gates and gunning it for a quarter mile.

The answer to your question is that it would depend on the quarter  horse and would depend on the appendix.  You might have an appendix with a large, powerful engine competing against a "purebred" quartehorse who had  very light hindquarters.

  2. It depends on the horses, but probably not.  Theoretically, by breeding TB into QH, you'd be giving the horse a little more stamina, but probably be taking away some of that raw speed.  But it does depend on the horse.  Sometimes you get a fast horse and sometimes you get a slow horse... that's true for any breeding.  There's millions of TBs that are bred to be racehorses, who never make it to the track because they're not fast enough!  The same goes for QHs.  Not all QH races are quarter mile races.  Many of them actually race around a turn!  So breeding in some stamina will help.  As I said, theoretically, quarter horses are the fastest at a quarter mile... breeding them with anything is likely to cool down that speed a bit.  However, that's not always true.  There's tons of QH racers out there with TB blood in them!  When a QH earns enough points in competition (racing or showing) he's allowed to breed with other breeds.  Any foals who are mixed are appendix QHs.  Any appendix QH who then earns enough points, is allowed to breed with another breed.  (The key here is earning enough points... not just any QH is allowed to breed with a TB... it has to earn enough points... there are rules to restrict some QHs from breeding with others while allowing other QHs to breed with others.)  That means you can end up with QHs with a lot of non-QH blood in them.  Since they're registered QH, they can race, and there are many of them who can run just as fast as a pure QH.

QHs actually started out with TB blood.  TBs brought from Europe were bred with the Native American horses and the result was what grew into the QH breed today.  Wikipedia has this to say:

"One of the most famous of these early imports was Janus, a Thoroughbred who was the grandson of the Godolphin Arabian. He was foaled in 1746, and imported to colonial Virginia in 1756. The influence of Thoroughbreds like Janus contributed genes crucial to the development of the colonial "Quarter Miler," or "Quarter Mile Horse." This was a speedy working man's racer, sometimes referred to as the "Celebrated American Quarter Running Horse." The resulting horse was small, hardy, and quick, and was used as a work horse during the week and a race horse on the weekends."

The interesting thing is, a QH is allowed to breed with a TB to make an appendix QH... but that foal can't be registered with the Jockey Club as a TB.  To be TB, you have to be purebred... TB with TB.  The AQHA is open to adding new blood into the breed, just with some rules and restrictions.

  3.   Well You have a great question, But it seems like the right answers are all there

Almost all Quarter horses have T.B Blood in them

Same goes to Paints that race, and Palominos that race E.T.C

If you study the back breeding on them They all have T. B some where

The first mare or Dam  as a Quarter Horse was Number like 16 Unamed mare By unknown SIRE AND DAM !

I have owned many seiners cutters Race , Quarters in my life and still have one a  Skipper W -

That all lead back to a mix of Thoroughbreds in the breeding

This has gone on for ever, ,

Now to set  Km  straight,   Just about every PAINT, PALOMINO , REINING, CUTTING, BULL DOGGING , ROPING HORSE, AND THE fastest Quarter horse's alive,  Will have a distinct relative to a T,B ,

So Curlin,, I know your a fan of T.B's, But some one forgot to mention to your favorite person, That APPENDIX MEANS he is part of Both,

He will get his full Quarter horse papers when he can PROVE HIM SELF AS A QUARTER, HORSE,( ROM ) REG Of Merits )

AS in winning a   S.I    ( that means speed index ) fast enough to become full Quarter horse

Also If his father was appendix his  (Get)> meaning his babies ) have to have run at  that also for him to become a Sire of Quarters

There are many T.B. SIRE's  just FOR Quarters HORSES,

Many people get confused, when When they do not understand

Now that we are all on the same wave length, Only one Answer I think is out of order,

I think the rest know , and never trained or even owned a horse. Funny they got it right, But one!

  4. Well Curlin 99% OF Quarter horse's are running quarters/

Boy I hate to be the one to say this to you, And the first person who answered,, But she is so wrong,

But they have been breeding quarters with T.B.S FOR yrs and yrs

    They are called Appendix..

P.S. I will give you names of the top quarters running and have ran that have T.B. BLOOD IN THEM Like I said

about 99% have are mixed with both breeds,

  5. It is very hard to say. I have seen some VERY fast thoroughbreds and some very slow quarter horses. In theory you would be breeding a fast horse with stamina. but it just isn't that simple. You could register it as a quarter horse but not as a thoroughbred. By the way there are thousands of this exact breeding racing as quarter horses.

  6. yez 1/4 horses do have T.B. Blood in them for many yrs

    3-bars was a t.b

so anyone to say no to it, is not very smart or does not know racing 1/4 horses at all

some people are just not very knowledged enough

i know this and not from here  they are a cold bred

Bediuno is a T.B and is , was the fastest in all match races ever, against 1/4 horses
