Question:

Would a traditional British fish and chip shop in the Phoenix area do well?

We are a British-American family (hubby is English, I'm American) living in the east valley of Phoenix. We know of only one tradtional British chippy that is about 2 hours away from us. We miss being able to go to just a normal fish and chip takeaway place and don't want to have to plan a "night out" to a pub somewhere just for fish and chips. Do any other Brits in our area feel the same way? We are considering opening a fish and chip place reminscent of the ones back home (we're from the Somerset area). Before we even really think about opening it though we are wondering if this is something that there is a demand for. The economy isn't the best but we'd love to do it to create a place for the British community. We'd do it with a healthy and environmentally friendly stance- offering steamed fish in addition to fried, using recycled products and fish that are not endangered, etc. I know there are a lot of lovely British people here so what do you think? Thx for any kind words!

  1. Well, a lot of people I know LOOOOOVEEEEEE

Pete's Fish and Chips. But its a chain. I'm almost

positive something authentic would do amazingly

well. Let us know if the ball gets rolling!

  2. yes i do think it would do well espacially with all the tourists that just roll in for winter and people in the valley are looking for diffrent styles of food so i do think it is a great idea and i know for sure i would eat there so just go for it i hope you do great!!

  3. Yes! must black red and white pudding as well! chips must be fryed in oil mixed with a bit of malt vinegar and fish must be be cod or haddock for sure!! place wise near tempe town lake good local!!

  4. There's a great need for a variety of restaurants in the East Valley, particularly in Gilbert and Queen Creek. That being said, I have observed that seafood, in general, is not greatly favored in the Valley. If you do decide to have a go at it then Gilbert should be your location. There's a great influx of seafood eating Californian immigrants there.

  5. Yes! Please come to Gilbert and start your restaurant! I live there (if you hadn't already guessed) and would love to see a restaurant like yours thrown in the mix. I'm tired of Pei Wei, Subway, Panda and all the other chains. If you advertise well and market your place as you note above I think you will do very well - the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce would be glad to assist you in your efforts. Good luck and I hope to see you soon!

BTW - we currently have Molly Branigan's which has a killer fish fry, but it would be nice to have place with easy takeaways or just order & sit/cafeteria style as what I experienced in Dublin.
