Question:

Would a wood sealant or paint work for this?

Well after doing some math, new carpet or even stick on flooring would be out of budget. We are looking to do something for max $500...and thats pushing it.

Our carpet is so disgusting though its almost unlivable. (we are renting, but carpet won't be replaced unless we get rid of our animals even though its been here since the 70's, which I just found out) Thats almost 40 year old carpet! Yuk!

So I'm thinking it would almost be better to just live on the wood under the carpet, but it looks iffy. What do you think I could put over this so that we could walk on it? Mop it etc?

  1. also check you carpet liquidators, home improvement stores etc for carpet pieces.  You can do some interesting things with those and they are often cheap.

  2. u cant do mutch with them floors they are compressed partical board look for carpet for free or try indoor out door carpet would look better than that you can also look here under classifieds www.craigslist.com/ your city here then look under free or post an add for free under wanted you may find something there to help ya out if all else go to you local salvation army or good will they have loads of stuff ive even seen used carpets in there good luck

  3. NO PAINT, NO SEALER.... This is the sub floor, which is designed not as finished floor.  Splinters a popping,,,,,

Check on cheap carpet,,,, but if the carpet is that bad, and represents a health hazard,,,, push the landlord and pay a pet fee.

Do not take up the carpet without the landlords permission, or guess who gets to buy new carpet.

Check into vinyl peal and stick tiles..... cheap.

    Good luck.

  4. a friend of mine stains osb (oriented strand board) and it looks cool, then you wood need to roll on a sealer made for floors

  5. I would take your pictures to Home Depot or Lowes and let them see what you have. They would be your best chance to figure out what to use. I would really be afraid to paint it without sealing it too. Since this looks like cork or something and I would be afraid to use by it's self. Also, have you thought about tile?? They have some that you can put down that would only cost you a couple of hundred dollars and it is peel and stick and these have improved a whole lot in recent years.

Good Luck with whatever you choose.

  6.   Like most people say you can t paint / stain that.. Peal and stick are out of the question because they require a luan sub floor and you state thats out out the budget. Ask about installing a laminate floor.. They ll hold up to the pets( aside from pee pee ) Check w/ landlord and aks about splitting the cost and have it from your rent.Laminate can run as low as 1.50/2.00 a s/f plus foam underlayment(cheap) GL

  7. painting or sealant is not the best for that type of wood. plus will the landlord let you paint it? Painting it good cause you more head aches if something gets spilled on it. Best bet is to find a carpet outlet place and put it down  your self . you should be able to do it for under $500.  or find  place that has  a few large scraps  and do each room separately.
