  1. It depends on the model (if it did it would tell you on the specs and/or packaging and would have more in/out).

The way that they work is taking input analogue conbining it and converting it to a digital signals and the sending them off via HDMI connection. (It doesnot upgrade the signal but does recombine it and digitize it)

This is a one way street.  The process is not reversed the other way around as it is a different process to do the following.

The converter has to  have an HDMI input and then convert the signal to analogue and split it again to output to Component.

  2. A stand alone component to HDMI converter will not work in reverse.

You can go from component video to HDMI but you can not go the other way. It has to do with the HDCP (high definition content protection) which must be used with HDMI. HDCP can not be used with component therfore HDMI can not be converted to component. Devices which can do it such as high end video scalers from Faroudja and ANchor Bay will downconvert any HD content to 480p over the component connection. If it is copywrite protected. Which basically covers all purchased media.

It is kinda crappy becaue I have an HDTV without HDMI. I am not able to watch any BluRay or HDDvD on my tv in 1080i or p. It automatically gets downconverted to 480p over the component video connection.

  3. You can buy both, a HDMI to component converter

and a component to HDMI converter
