  1. Probably because there are already large numbers of British people immigrating to the USA each year, which is why they are excluded from entering the Green Card Lottery. I believe there are quite a lot of other countries barred for the same reason.  They try and make it as fair as possible to get a good mix of people from lots of different backgrounds. The official name for it is the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program. :-)

  2. There are very little chances of winning a green card through the green card lottery.

I am French and I have played this green card lottery already 7 times without success!

And I've tried to searched other ways to go to the US but the only visa I could get was a 4-month summer job visa (J1) when I was a student.

I had to go back home after the 4 months and since then I can't find any way to go back to the US.

    Good luck to you.

  3. Its a hard process! i'm currently trying to get my English fiance here! I LOVE English peeps! Good luck! Cheers mate x

  4. There are several routes:

    1. Green card lottery - you just win the lottery and then can become a permanent resident. The only requirements for this are basically not being a criminal or communist

    2. Sponsorship by a relative - you can be sponsored to enter by a parent, child, spouse or brother or sister. Beyond that, basically the same rules as for the Green Card lottery.

    3. Work permit-related visa - you must be sponsored by an employer for this. The previous respondents are correct that formally this job must be vital to the company and they must prove that they couldn't find a qualified US citizen. In reality, these things are normally approved if the company wants to hire you. The hassle of going through this for the company means that they will only bother with it if it's an important enough job, and if they advertise the position well, then they can just use that as evidence that they couldn't find an American.

    4. Student visa

There are a few other special routes to getting a green card. If you have some high level, specific skills then you can get a green card outside the lottery/quota system on the basis of those. This is very time-consuming, and is normally done primarily by people who've come in on work permits, and decided to stay. The big advantage to this route is that it allows you to switch jobs freely, and to have recourse to public funds, etc
