  1. Quick answer, Yes.

    Long answer,

    You won't get waas (probably not an issue if you don't know what it is, its a way of increasing accuracy of a gps receiver).

    If you have a mapping unit, you probably won't have maps for the area unless you download them to your unit.


  2. Would it work? Simply put yes.  Would it function in the same way, not nearly.  American automotive GPS are loaded with basemaps of the US and sometimes Canada.

    To more easily understand this consider the cursor on a GPS as a pencil point and when you move it draws on a pre-loaded map, this map is provided by the manufacturer of the GPS so if a map of the US is all that is on the GPS your pencil point will be far off the map and in blank space.
