I'm contemplating changing careers from my desk job into law enforcement. I'm concerned that my eng. degree is basically of little value if I change to LE.

  1. Yes, any degree will be helpful in getting hired, also in most agencies in getting a better starting pay grade.

As to the engineering degree, that would be helpful in working accident reconstruction, or crime scene investigations.  Most people would be suprised as to what is actually done during a thorough investigation.

  2. Yes your degree will help. Most law enforcement agencies are looking for higher education beyond high school. The major of the degree is not very important.

  3. Yes. Any degree helps with almost any job. You're going to have to go back to school, but a college degree on an application is often times what people look for.

  4. I just made the same change you are considering.  I left a job from being the Western Region Service Engineer to being a Juvenile Probation Officer.  You will get paid extra(normally) for having a degree.  It doesn't matter want to degree is in.  The law enforcement academies will teach you what they want you to know anyway.

Only problem I had in the transition was getting used to standing on my feet ALL day.  I think my knees when into shock.  Also I lost over $1000 a month in pay but I don't travel anymore which my wife really appreciates.
