  1. Depending on the country really.

There are always companies that will try to do illegal things and/or don't care about ethics/moral stuff.

But there are countries (such as Spain) where things are legal that aren't in other countries (eg: pregnancy abortions till the 6th or 7th month iirc?)

It has been a while since this was in the news, so things might have changed meanwhile.

So, short answer, yes, there will always be people/companies/mad scientist that will try this, regardless whether it's allowed or not, or right or wrong.

  2. I would hope that no drug company would knowingly or deliberately create something to cause DNA mutations although I could be naive.

I can't think of any 'long-term profit' in doing so off the top of my head (except, perhaps, to induce abortion...something along those lines...shiver).

    Good, thought-provoking question, though.

  3. Nope. Unless ordered by government.

  4. Yes, probably.  There are many drugs which shouldn't be taken while pregnant.

For example, nicotine can cause mutations in fetal DNA according to the linked article.  And drug companies create transdermal nicotine patches.  So I think that's an example of what you're talking about.

Of course, from a health perspective a pregnant woman (or any woman at all) really shouldn't be using nicotine at all.

  5. Thalidomide the drug used for multiple myeloma is severely teratogenic. It is not prescribed for pregnant women
