Would anyone be interested in living in a horse and buggy only town?

There would be all the modern conveniences except it would be solar, we wouldn't use water to flush the toilet, it would be contained in ventilated tanks. Food would be sold in reusable containers, so waste is kept to a bare minimum. Sound OK? Do you think we could get the government permits? Or would they consider it a threat to their control? I'm thinking that the population would be limited and the town would work on a neighborly honor basis. What do you think?

  1. Thousands do.  They are called Mennonites.  And they generally have much more closely knit communities with little or no crime.  I'd be willing to trade a bit of elbow grease for a more pastoral (pastural ;-) lifestyle.

  2. I would love to live in that town!

  3. Isn't horse c**p a lot worse problem than carbon emissions? Where will it all go? If people won't clean up after their dogs, will they really clean up after something 20 times bigger? Will it be composted and used in the gardens? What will you do with it in the winter? Just curious.

  4. h**l yeah! that would be awesome.... i'd love it. if the world or even just USA did things like that, global warming, ozone problems, and receding rainforests would be less of a dillema. some of the main causes of enviornment probs are water waste, trees being cut down, and wasting.

  5. I like exactly what we have now.

All I want to see is gradual improvements on efficiency and sustainability.

The reusable food container idea is good.  But please remember that you're coming at this from a nice, safe, hygenic year 2008.  Roll the clock back 100 years and you find that disease trasmitted precisely from "reusable" things.

Throw-away stuff contributed a lot towards sanitation and safety.  I'm all for reusable food containers, but you better make sure the cleaning system is in place.
