I plan on being a self dependent day trader in San Diego. Would a directway internet connection be best suited for my needs?

  1. In a rural area where other high-speed options like DSL and cable aren't available, using a satellite-based internet service can be a good option. In general, satellite service can be expensive, impacted by weather, give high latency and are slow for encrypted connections.

Latency is the couple second delay caused by the time it takes for each signal to move from your dish to the satellite and then back to a ground station. Using any encryption (like the kind many employers require you use if you are working from home) can bypass the software-based compression that satellite services rely on, giving slow connectivity for work stuff.

On the plus side, satellite service is high bandwidth (1.5 mbps downlink and 100 kbps uplink) which is way better than dial-up if you are in a rural area.

If your location in San Diego has other options like DSL, those will likely provide better service.
