Question:

Would beer damage be covered under my homeowner's insurance policy?

Last night some friends and I got pretty ripped and started shaking up our beer bottles and spraying them all over the place in my basement. Before too long, my basement walls were soaked and the carpet was damp. I was too drunk to do anything then and so I just passed out.

I just got home from work today to discover that more liquid got onto the walls and carpet then I thought. It smells disgusing and the drywall and carpet may be ruined. Can I file a claim with my homeowners insurance?

  1. I highly doubt this would be covered. Most insurance claims can only be covered as "Acts of God". If you claimed someone broke into your house and vandalized it with beer then maybe. Of course this is covered under insurance fraud and you would be investigated fully.

If you did and someone found this post you would be required to pay the money they gave you back and probably spend a few days in the clink.

Acts of God include but are not limited to: Fire, Flood, Earthquake, Tornado, car smashing through your front room, place crashing into your house and generally anything that is unlikely to happen.

Vandalism falls under robbery. If someone maliciously came into your house and spray painted the walls and broke stuff, this would be covered as well as it too is considered act of God. You need to check your home owners insurance manual to see what exactly your policy covers as it does not cover all things. If you build on a flood plain, you can't get flood insurance and if you build in the forest you can get fire insurance. Hopefully you are not in a no party zone.

  2. no way in sam hill

  3. No, I dont think so.

  4. Depends on the peril.  It's covered like the rest of the contents of your house, for damage by fire, theft, etc.

But intentional damage is NOT covered.  Even if you regret it later.

I don't believe this will be covered.

  5. I Hope this is a joke.

  6. You can make a claim, but they'll deny it.

Your HO Ins doesn't cover dabage due to actions you take.

For example, you get angry, punch the wall, and break through the drywall.  Your insurance will not pay this.

And claiming you weren't in your right mind or that you weren't yourself when the beer damage happened won't cut it. =)

  7. Sounds like a good learning experience to me. Love that old-beer-in-the-carpet smell. :D

  8. No you do not, self inflicted damage is not covered by insurance. Then people would be going you know I really am tired of this rug, lets ruin it so the insurance will get us a new one. Insurance covers accidents, this obviously was not one. Nice friends you have there really respect your property. Call it a lesson learned

  9. As soon as you report this claim....the adjuster will notify underwriting and odds are very very good you will be canceled.

(Even if they deny your claim.....the adjuster will notify underwriting and you will be invited to get insurance else where).

Most homeowners policies exclude intentional loss.   But you can speak with your agent and see what they say.

Personally, I'd invite those very same friends back over for a cleaning party (and serve coke-cola...no beer). Since they made the mess with you....they can help you clean it up.

  10. A lame attempt at humor.

  11. You have no claim whatsoever.  The insurer is not going to pay for an act of negligence in which YOU participated.  You need to suck it up and start some serious cleaning.

  12. Your deductible is probably not less than $500.00

I seriously doubt it's covered and this type of reckless behavior would be a red flag to your insurance company.

Clean it up....try some OdorBan, usely at Sam's Club.

  13. lol have fun explaining that to your insurance
