Would being kind of "older" hinder my changes at being good at dance?

I'm 13 (which i know isnt 'older') and would like to start taking ballet, jazz, or some type of dance class. Do you think I would be able to be good at it? I mean, I'm not aiming to become a professional or anything, but I'm not sure if I'd just be wasting my time with classes. I don't have any background in dance or gymnastics or anything that has to do with dance. I also do not have too much information on the place I would be taking the classes, but I'm pretty sure I would be in a class either with other teenagers or smaller kids. And, I know no one really would know if I am 'prima ballerina material' or anything, but has anyone ever been in my position and done all right?

Thanks for reading!!

  1. trust me its never to late to start dancing. whether you have experience or not, it will be good for you. its like trying a new sport for the very first time. you see i dont see why people put dancing at the very end of the line. they think oh yeah ive never even kicked a ball before, but i should be pretty good at soccer. and then they say oh yeah ive never even kicked past 90 degrees, or have done a single turn, so i cant dance. theres no difference. its just like starting a new activity. you dont have to be as flexible as other kids are to dance. you just have to be able to be willing to work on it. you would only be wasting your time if you dont wanna try and be like those kids who are awesome! im not saying you have to be awesome in order to make dancing worth the money, but you have to wanna do it. you would probably be put in a 10-11 aged class or the level just below you. but thats only because of your experience. they did that to me. but if your good, theyd move you up. you will most definately not be in a teenagers class. only because your too young.(im 13 if your wondering how i know this).  teens go from like 15-17. then there is senior classes.yes a 14 year old can take a teen class but thats not you, not to be mean. also, dont put yourself in the ranking position. it doesnt matter if your a prima ballerina or if your a piece of c**p. well it does matter. but so what. just try. and try. dont give up. and practice whether youre at the studio or your in your basement. just dont stop or youll get worse, not better. well i hoped i helped!! and remember, dancing is only softball, but it costs a lot more! hehe. good luck!

  2. all I can say is try you might surprise yourself with what you can do

  3. i started dance when i was two but quit when i was five. i went back when i was nine, but quit when i was ten. then i went back AGAIN when i was fourteen, this time to a different, more laid back studio, and i had a really great time. i really think it depends on the place where you want to go. the first place i went was really intense, everyone had been going there like since they were babies, everyone was in competitions, etc. the other studio was smaller, with less people, and not everyone was a good dancer. you just need to find the right place for you that won't put pressure on you but will improve your dancing.

also, sometimes you won't do well with a certain kind of class. i know i could never be in ballet, but i did really well in jazz, which is a little different, but like, easier than ballet (in my opinion). then i decided to take modern and that's what i really loved. i wouldn't do anything like acro though because if you haven't been doing it for years you can really get hurt.

just go for it and have fun! you'll get in shape and probably make some friends while you're at it.

  4. I completely know what it's like. I started dance two years ago when I was 13 at a not so good school. I dropped after half a year, joined a more professional studio the next year at the age of 14 (almost 15) By a scheduling mistake I was moved into the level 2 class and recommend for pre-professional (Ballet) level 2 the next year with girls that had been dancing since they were three! Never had any dance experience before had except some clogging when I was five for a little bit. So...Go for it! If you find it's something you truly enjoy you'll work to be the best you can and you'd be surprised where that can get you.

    Good luck!

Oh. I must disagree with the person below me about the teen class. it really depends on the what classes the school you go to offers. Where I dance there is a level 1 Teen/adult ballet class and they put 13 year olds in it. So it really depends on what they have to offer you!
