Would chin ups or pull ups be more useful in boxing if you had to pick one over the other?

P.S. Any other boxing workouts other than pull ups, chin ups, sit ups (in several ways), push ups (in several ways), varied methods of running (sprints, long distance) and varied forms of swimming?

Please don't say weight training/lifting because Joe Frazier said in his book that the top champions in boxing history never used weights (because they slow you down), so you should not either. Boxers should do I forgot what the exact word is called but something like callesnetics (resistance/ exercise with your own body weight.

  1. I would think pull ups are better because not only are they tougher than chin ups, but they work the wings a lot more (your lats, specifically) if you do them right.

These back muscles would improve your punching even just a little bit.

  2. Yeah, Joe Frazier is right, weights are not good for boxing. Look at what happened to Shannon Briggs after he started lifting weights. Sure he's big, but he is slow and doesn't throw many punches. Push-ups and pull-ups work best for boxing, because they work the muscles that you actually punch with. but pretty much any cardio will work because you dont just use your upper body to punch, you also use your legs. The reason Kelly Pavlik is so powerful is because pushes off with his legs to make his punches more powerful. That is why he is so much more powerful than people that physically appear buffer and stronger than him. You should find good body excerisizes for all your muscle groups, for then you will be able to fight at your full potential. And especiallly if you have never ran or swam before regularly (like 3 or four time a week), doing that will help you bob and weave better, punch better, and overall feel lighter and faster on your feet. Jump-roping also works, in helps you work on your balance and will vastly improve your overall foot movement. Most important are sport-specific excersizes like punching a punching bag, a speedbag, and sparring.

  3. Chinups. they will strengthen your upper body, but not bulk you up as much as pullups.

  4. chin ups are better because they work out your triceps more and it's your triceps that give you more power in your arms when throwing punches.
