Would switching from oil to coal help our economy? (united states)

  1. The US has a great deal of coal, which is a cheap way of generating electricity. Unfortunately it's also very polluting, both in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and others including sulfur (which can be reduced with various technologies).

    The problem with coal of course is transport, you can't run your car or modern trains on coal, so oil is basically essential for the foreseeable future .

    That being said, increasing the use of coal in the US would probably lower electricity prices slightly, at the cost of the environment.


  2. digging out oil is more expensive where as coal can be cheap so it is called black gold .

  3. The USA uses a lot of coal (which is one of the resources we have an abundance of) in power generation.

    However, a lot of our transportation is based upon gas or diesel which is oil based.  Also, plastics are made from oil.

    Would it help our economy?  Not immediately.
